Description

U.S. Browning M1919A4 .30 Caliber Display Machine Gun on NHW Dreibein 34 Pattern Tripod

This Browning M1919A4 display machine gun is a deactivated U.S. .30 caliber Browning ground gun mounted on an NHW-marked West German MG anti-aircraft tripod in the Dreibein 34 pattern. The Browning retains the M1919A4 form with a rectangular riveted receiver, top-cover feed system, right-side operating handle, rear pistol-grip backplate, and perforated air-cooled barrel jacket. The tripod has a modified pintle that accepts the Browning mount.

Browning M1919A4 Display Machine Gun

This set pairs a U.S. Browning machine gun display with a German-pattern anti-aircraft tripod. The tripod is not a Lafette-style sustained-fire mount. It uses the taller open tripod form, with folding tubular legs, a central head assembly, ground spades, and an elevated pintle position.

The NHW marking is visible on the tripod head collar. That stamp fits postwar West German / Bundeswehr production of the MG anti-aircraft tripod family. The form follows the Dreibein 34 pattern used with German MG34 and MG42 equipment, then carried forward after the war for MG1, MG2, and MG3 service.

Construction / Configuration / Pattern

The Browning receiver has flat side plates, riveted construction, and the long top cover used over the belt-feed mechanism. The right side shows the operating handle and receiver slot. At the rear, the backplate carries the pistol grip and trigger. Forward of the receiver, the perforated barrel jacket surrounds the air-cooled barrel assembly.

The tripod has a green military finish, tubular folding legs, leg hardware, carry strap, ground spades, and a central head collar. The head collar is stamped NHW. The NHW tripod identification is supported by references to West German Dreibein-pattern examples marked NHW and 12-135-6089, including a Bundeswehr anti-aircraft tripod cataloged for MG3/MG34/MG42/MG53 platforms. Comparable postwar examples of this pattern appear with NATO stock numbering and 1960s NHW date markings.

The pintle has been altered to fit the Browning receiver group. That modification is visible at the tripod head. It is an important part of the display and should remain with the set.

Historical Context / Pattern Development

The M1919A4 was the principal U.S. air-cooled Browning ground machine gun of the Second World War period. It developed from the earlier Browning water-cooled machine gun lineage, but used an air-cooled barrel system and a lighter ground-gun arrangement. U.S. forces used the M1919A4 in infantry, vehicle, defensive, and support roles.

The A4 pattern has a familiar profile. Its rectangular receiver, top-cover belt feed, rear pistol grip, and circular perforated barrel jacket separate it visually from earlier water-cooled Browning guns. It also differs from aircraft and tank variants, which used different fittings for their own roles.

The tripod belongs to a separate German equipment line. The Dreibein 34 was an anti-aircraft tripod pattern for German machine guns. Postwar West German production kept the general tripod form for the MG1, MG2, and MG3 family. NHW-marked examples belong in that Bundeswehr-era context rather than being described as confirmed wartime Wehrmacht tripods.

This assembly differs from both a standard U.S. M2 tripod setup and a German Lafette sustained-fire mount. The modified pintle brings the Browning gun and German-pattern tripod together as a display assembly.

Condition

This is a deactivated display item represented as completed in accordance with BATF regulations. It is intended for display only. The NHW-marked MG anti-aircraft tripod is in excellent condition. It retains its green finish, leg hardware, head assembly, carry strap, and ground spades. The NHW stamp remains visible on the head collar.

The Browning display gun shows a dark finish with handling marks, scattered surface wear, and light scuffing. The receiver sides remain cleanly defined. The perforated barrel jacket, sights, pistol grip, and top cover give the piece a complete display appearance. The pintle modification is visible at the tripod head.
