Description

Mosin Nagant Rear Sight Base – Original Surplus

This Mosin Nagant rear sight base is an original surplus part with the classic stepped profile found on early Imperial Russian sight assemblies. The left side carries the correct 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 graduations, a pattern tied to rifles that used arshin-based sight markings rather than the later metric system.

Mosin Nagant rear sight base

The stepped base gives this part its distinctive appearance. Instead of a smooth ramp, the sides use a sawtooth pattern that supports the sight leaf at set intervals. That layout belongs to the earlier Mosin sight system used on M1891-pattern rifles and related long-rifle variants. The numbered steps represent hundreds of arshini, an older Russian unit of measure used on original service sights.

Pattern and historical context

Russian arsenals usually placed the 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 markings on the left side of the base, while some French-contract Chatellerault examples placed them on the right. That small detail helps define the early pattern and gives this part a strong period identity. When Russia later moved away from arshin graduations, later rear sight types changed both in layout and measurement system.

Condition

Condition is good overall. The base retains a solid, well-defined profile, and the stepped sides remain clear. The numbered markings on the left side also remain legible, which helps the part present well as an original military component.

Why this pattern stands out

Early Mosin sight parts carry a visual character that later bases do not. The stepped form, arshin graduations, and long-rifle profile immediately place the part in the earlier development of the Mosin-Nagant system. For that reason, this base offers more than simple utility. It brings the look and language of the original Imperial-era sight arrangement into a restoration or display.
