Description
Original German WWI Seitengewehr M1884/98 II Sawback Bayonet – Crown-over-W Proofed, Fitted with WWII Scabbard
Up for sale is an original German WWI Seitengewehr M1884/98 II sawback bayonet, intended for use on the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle. This example is clearly proofed with the crown-over-W royal acceptance mark for Kaiser Wilhelm II, a validating detail for period collectors and researchers. The M1884/98 II is the classic long-blade bayonet adopted and carried by Imperial German infantry in the Great War.
The blade retains the distinctive sawback teeth along the spine and shows honest service patina and handling wear consistent with frontline use and century-long storage. The ricasso bears the Crown-over-W proof and other inspector stamps appropriate to period manufacture. The wooden grips are solid and secure on the tang, held with original rivets and showing expected age-related wear, Though it has been lightly polished. The release mechanism functions as intended for secure mounting to a Gewehr 98 bayonet lug.
This particular bayonet has been mounted in a WWII-era scabbard, which is not original to the WWI service bayonet but provides a serviceable and period-appropriate display pairing. The scabbard shows finish wear and patina consistent with mid-20th century issue. Collectors should note the scabbard is a later fitment; the blade and hilt remain original WWI material.
As a representative Imperial German Seitengewehr with clear Kaiser Wilhelm II proofing and intact sawback, this bayonet is a valuable piece for collections of WWI edged weapons, Mauser rifle accessories, or German military history. It displays well with Gewehr 98 rifle mounts or as a standalone exhibit of trench-era equipment.
