Japanese Russo-Japanese War Medal
Up for sale is an original Japanese Russo-Japanese War Medal, awarded to Imperial Japanese military personnel who served during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905—a pivotal conflict that marked Japan’s emergence as a modern world power.
Struck in bronze, the medal features the Imperial chrysanthemum crest above crossed Rising Sun flags, backed by a stylized display of paulownia leaves—symbols of both the Emperor and national authority. The top bar is inscribed in Japanese kanji, translating to “War Medal for Service in the Russo-Japanese War”. The original ribbon displays alternating stripes of blue, green, and white, representing loyalty, valor, and peace.
This medal was awarded to both Army and Navy personnel who took part in key campaigns such as the Siege of Port Arthur, the Battle of Mukden, and the decisive Battle of Tsushima, where Japan’s navy crushed the Russian Baltic Fleet—shocking the world and altering global perceptions of military power in East Asia.
A foundational piece in the history of Japanese militaria, this War Medal is a must-have for collectors interested in Meiji-era military expansion, early 20th-century warfare, or the rise of Imperial Japan on the world stage.
