Description
Spanish 88.9mm Instalaza M65 Bazooka – Original Military Anti-Tank Launcher
This Spanish 88.9mm Instalaza M65 Bazooka is a very nice original example of the Spanish-made anti-tank launcher developed from the U.S. M20 Super Bazooka system. Instalaza produced the M65 for Spanish military use during the 1960s and 1970s, and the pattern combined the familiar Super Bazooka layout with improved ignition and updated ammunition types. This example still retains its original sling, optical sight, integral bipod, and rear monopod, which together give it strong display appeal and clear Cold War military character.
Spanish 88.9mm Instalaza M65 Bazooka
The Instalaza M65 is best understood as a Spanish evolution of the American 88.9mm launcher concept rather than a simple copy. It kept the recognizable general form of the M20, yet it introduced its own refinements in ignition and ammunition. Because of that, the M65 occupies an interesting place in postwar launcher development. It reflects how proven Second World War anti-tank ideas continued into the Cold War in updated national service patterns.
Construction / Configuration / Pattern
This example retains the original sling and still sets up correctly with the integral bipod and rear monopod in place. Those features give the launcher the proper service profile and help preserve the complete look of the system. The optical sight remains a major strength of the piece. It still works, and the rubber eyepiece remains intact, which is an especially desirable detail on a launcher of this type. The range measurements in the sight are marked in decámetros, another correct and notable feature of the Spanish pattern.
Compared with the U.S. M20, the M65 used an improved ignition method and was designed around updated Spanish ammunition types. Typical ammunition included the CHM65 high-explosive anti-tank round, as well as the MB66 dual-purpose and FIM66 smoke projectiles. Those ammunition developments help distinguish the M65 from the earlier American launcher that inspired it.
Historical Context / Pattern Development
The Spanish Instalaza M65 belongs to the postwar generation of anti-tank launchers that grew from wartime rocket and recoilless weapon experience. The U.S. M20 Super Bazooka had already established the practical value of a larger 88.9mm shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon, and Spain adapted that concept into its own domestic military system through Instalaza. Rather than merely repeating the American pattern, the M65 refined it for Spanish service requirements and gave it a distinct place in Cold War ordnance development.
That makes the M65 especially interesting to collectors because it bridges two eras. On one hand, it clearly descends from the famous bazooka lineage of the Second World War and Korea. On the other, it reflects the later Cold War effort to modernize established launcher designs with better firing systems and revised ammunition. As a result, the M65 stands as a strong representative of postwar European anti-tank weapon development.
Condition
This is a very nice example overall. The launcher still retains the original sling and sets up correctly with both the integral bipod and rear monopod. The optical sight still works, and the rubber eyepiece remains intact, which adds significantly to the presentation. Overall, it displays as a complete, well-preserved, and visually impressive Spanish military launcher with strong Cold War character.
