Description
These Smith & Wesson N-Frame Target Stocks are original factory square-butt Goncalo Alves revolver grips featuring bordered checkering, silver S&W medallions, and the later speedloader-relief pattern. The interiors retain the original large silver-colored medallion washers and feature a clearly legible factory ink date stamp reading “JUN 04 1984.”
Smith & Wesson N-Frame Square Butt Target Stocks
These are the large factory Target stocks designed for Smith & Wesson N-frame square-butt revolvers. The broad lower profile, pronounced upper horn, and hand-filling construction distinguish them from the smaller Magna and service-style stocks. This particular set is an excellent dated example from the final years of Smith & Wesson’s traditional washer-equipped Target stock production.
Construction / Configuration / Pattern
The stocks are manufactured from Goncalo Alves hardwood with a warm reddish-brown finish, attractive natural grain, and factory bordered checkered panels. Both panels retain their original silver-tone Smith & Wesson medallions, and the original grip screw is included.
The left panel features the later factory speedloader-relief cut, providing additional clearance for speedloader use. The interiors retain the large silver-colored metal stock circles or washers used to secure the medallions.
The most significant identifying feature is the factory ink date stamp “JUN 04 1984” on the interior butt of one panel. This original production marking provides an unusually precise date for the stocks and adds considerable interest for collectors of factory Smith & Wesson accessories.
Historical Context / Pattern Development
Smith & Wesson Target stocks were developed to provide a fuller grip than standard service or Magna stocks. On the large N-frame revolvers, these grips became a recognizable factory option for target shooting, sporting use, and general revolver handling.
Throughout their production history, Smith & Wesson revised the Target stock pattern, including changes to checkering, speedloader clearance, medallion attachment, and interior construction.
The large internal medallion washers were eliminated around 1984–1985, when Smith & Wesson transitioned toward washerless, press-fit medallion construction. This pair, factory dated June 4, 1984, represents one of the later examples of the traditional washer-equipped configuration.
Condition
Excellent original condition. The Goncalo Alves wood retains a strong factory finish with attractive grain and minimal handling wear. The bordered checkering remains sharp and well-defined, while both silver S&W medallions remain clean and intact.
The interiors are exceptionally well preserved, retaining both original silver medallion washers and the clearly visible JUN 04 1984 factory date stamp. The original grip screw is included.
A particularly nice dated factory set for collectors seeking correct 1980s N-frame Target stocks.
