Swiss Army Bicycle Modell 05 – 1945 Production Military Bicycle

Swiss Military Bicycle

This Swiss Military Bicycle is a 1945-produced Ordonnanzfahrrad Modell 05, the classic Swiss Army bicycle used by Swiss bicycle infantry and retained in service for decades after the Second World War. Finished in black and retaining its frame-mounted carry case in excellent condition, this example presents as a strong and highly complete piece of Swiss military transport history. The Modell 05 entered service in 1905 and remained in continuous military use until the Swiss Army replaced it with the MO-93, giving the pattern one of the longest service lives of any military bicycle of the twentieth century.

Swiss Military Bicycle

The Ordonnanzfahrrad Modell 05 is instantly recognizable for its heavy-duty military frame, black finish, and large integrated carry case fitted within the frame. That feature alone separates it from ordinary civilian bicycles and gives the Swiss Army pattern its unmistakable silhouette. This 1945 example retains that case in excellent condition, with access from the right-hand side and a separate document and map compartment on the left. As a result, it presents not just as a bicycle, but as a complete military transport tool designed for practical field use.

Construction / Configuration / Pattern

This example follows the classic Modell 05 pattern in its proper black finish. Swiss military bicycles of this type were generally painted all-over black, usually in a semi-matte finish, though some later examples appeared in olive drab. This bicycle remains black, which suits the established appearance of the wartime pattern well.

The Modell 05 used a 57 cm one-size frame intended to fit riders from roughly 1.55m to 1.95m in height. It rode on 650B wheels and typically used a 20-tooth rear sprocket with a 50-tooth chainring, giving a single fixed military gearing intended for durability and standardization rather than speed. The bicycle retains one of the pattern’s defining features, the large frame carry case, which remains in excellent condition. That case opens from the right-hand side and includes a separate left-side compartment for documents and maps.

This example also retains important service fittings. It has the integrated headlight and bottle dynamo, which operates on the sidewall of the front tire. The dynamo remains present. It also retains the mudguards and rear carry rack, both of which are correct and important to the full military profile of the bicycle. Swiss military bicycles could also carry a front bag for a helmet or general gear, a bread bag attached to the rear rack, a small tool hold-all behind the seat tube, and a pump fitted either atop the case or ahead of the seat tube, depending on configuration. Even when stripped of some accessories, the Modell 05 still reflects the practical and adaptable military thinking behind the design.

The bicycle uses the correct earlier spoon-style front brake, an important detail on a 1945 example. The Modell 05 began as a single-speed bicycle with a rear coaster brake and rod-operated front spoon brake. From 1941, examples also received a cable-operated rear drum brake. Some variants, reportedly intended for medics, used a front drum brake in place of the spoon brake. This bicycle retains the spoon-style setup, which helps preserve its correct wartime character.

Historical Context / Pattern Development

The Ordonnanzfahrrad Modell 05 stands among the most iconic military bicycles ever issued. Officially introduced in 1905, it served the Swiss Army for nearly the entire twentieth century before the Army finally replaced it with the MO-93. Swiss bicycle infantry remained part of the military structure until 2001, which means the broader tradition associated with the military bicycle lasted far beyond the service life of most comparable patterns elsewhere.

Several makers produced the Modell 05 over its long production run, including Schwalbe, Cäsar, Cosmos, Mondia, and Condor. That long manufacturing history reflects the importance of the bicycle to Swiss military logistics and troop movement. Rather than serving as a novelty or secondary transport tool, the military bicycle formed a serious part of Swiss doctrine. Soldiers used these bicycles for movement between positions, support duties, messenger work, and transport across terrain where quiet, reliable mobility mattered.

What makes the Swiss military bicycle especially interesting is the way it balanced rugged simplicity with real battlefield utility. The single-speed drivetrain, heavy sprung leather saddle, cargo capacity, and frame-mounted storage gave the Modell 05 a level of practicality that suited a militia-based army operating in mountainous terrain. Two-wheel trailers could also be attached for cargo or stretcher work. Although the bicycle weighed over 50 pounds empty, Swiss doctrine expected troops to use it as a serious military tool rather than as a convenience item.

Even after the Modell 05 left front-line issue, many examples remained in use in Switzerland. Some continued in military roles on airfields with pilots and ground crews, while many others entered private hands after surplus release. That continued visibility has helped preserve the Modell 05 as one of the best-known national military bicycle patterns in the world.

Condition

This 1945 Swiss Military Bicycle remains in excellent overall condition. The frame-mounted carry case is a major strength of the piece and remains in excellent condition as well. The bicycle retains its black finish, integrated headlight, bottle dynamo, mudguards, and rear carry rack, all of which help preserve the complete military appearance of the pattern. The correct spoon-style brake is another strong and desirable feature. Taken as a whole, this is a very solid and highly displayable example of the classic Swiss Army Modell 05 bicycle.
