Description

This is an original British 75mm artillery shell and matching cartridge case, manufactured for use with the 75mm Gun, and bearing clear period ordnance markings on the case: “AM-LOT – 75MM GUN – Lot L 241-24 – GM Co.”

The AM-LOT designation (Ammunition Lot) reflects the British ordnance system of batch-controlled manufacture, allowing the War Department to track production quality, ballistic consistency, and inspection records. The lot number L 241-24 indicates a specific production batch, while GM Co. identifies the original manufacturer, a government-contracted firm supplying artillery ammunition during the early to mid-20th century.

The accompanying 75mm projectile is notable for its nickel-plated exterior. The shell itself is otherwise unmarked, which is not uncommon for certain British projectiles, particularly when identification was primarily carried on the cartridge case rather than the projectile body.

British 75mm ammunition saw service across multiple platforms and theaters, especially during the First and Second World Wars, where the caliber was employed in both field artillery and adapted anti-tank or support roles. Complete shell-and-case pairings with legible lot markings are increasingly scarce, as most surviving examples were separated, expended, or scrapped after service.

This example represents a strong, display-worthy artifact of British artillery production, offering clear insight into period manufacturing practices, ammunition lot control, and wartime logistics. Well suited for advanced collections, museum displays, or educational study focused on British ordnance and 20th-century artillery systems.

Overall length: Approx. 22 inches
