Original U.S. WWII M1918A2 BAR Cutaway — M23 Classroom Trainer

Offered is an original oversized M23 cutaway classroom trainer built to illustrate the M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) for instructional use. Designated Device 3-F-3 (M23) in U.S. training catalogs, these large-scale cutaways were produced so instructors could demonstrate the BAR’s internal components and cycle of operation to a full classroom.
This example was manufactured by J.H. Keeney & Company, Chicago, the wartime contractor contracted to produce oversized cutaway trainers. (Postwar production of similar trainers later passed to Dellenbarger Machine Co., New York.) The piece replicates the M1918A2 action and receiver at an enlarged scale so students could clearly see bolt travel, gas operation, op rod function, and trigger/sear interaction during demonstrations.
Constructed with an oversized “wooden” (cast aluminum) stock and strategically exposed metal action components, the trainer is non-firing and intended solely as an educational aid. The receiver and visible parts are machined to show moving elements; Acceptance stampings are present where typical. Condition reflects long-term instructional service and storage—surface wear, classroom handling marks, and stable structural integrity. Photographs show the exact item offered.
These M23 trainers were standard in U.S. Army and ROTC weapons classrooms during and after WWII and are now scarce survivors. They make excellent centerpieces for military museums, firearms-technology exhibits, and collectors of instructional ordnance and small-arms history.
