Up for sale is an authentic French Infantry Officer’s uniform grouping, consisting of a Model 1871 tunic, classic pantalon rouge trousers, and a rare Foreign Legion officer’s kepi. This Tunic and Trouser set represents the dress and field appearance of French officers in the years leading up to the First World War.
The Model 1871 infantry officer’s tunic features nine brass buttons, each decorated with the flaming bomb insignia of the French infantry. The collar bears large gilt and brass numerals “93”, denoting the 93rd Infantry Regiment. This tunic has clearly seen service, with numerous period repairs throughout, which add greatly to its authenticity and historical character.
The trousers are the unmistakable madder red “pantalon rouge”, the iconic color worn by French infantry until 1914. These trousers are strongly associated with the opening campaigns of World War I, when French troops advanced in bright red and blue before transitioning to more subdued horizon-blue uniforms. Their vibrant color remains a striking and historically important feature of this set.
The Foreign Legion officer’s kepi, finished in black, denotes officers or high-ranking status individuals. The kepi displays gold infantry insignia on the front, confirming its branch of service.
