Original U.S. Model 1859 Cavalry Sling – E. Gaylord Maker Marked

Up for sale is an original U.S. Model 1859 Cavalry Sling, produced by the famed Civil War contractor E. Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. This sling was standard issue to Union cavalry troopers during the American Civil War and is a highly desirable piece of equestrian gear for collectors of 19th-century militaria.

Constructed of heavy black bridle leather, the sling was designed to be worn over the shoulder and support a cavalryman’s carbine in the field. This example retains its clearly stamped “E. GAYLORD” maker’s mark, a hallmark of authenticity and quality. Gaylord was one of the largest suppliers of leather accoutrements to the Union Army, and his products are among the most collectible pieces of Civil War equipment.

The leather shows honest wear consistent with age and service, with some surface crazing and light scuffing, but remains flexible and intact for its age. The brass hardware retains a mellow patina, and the stitching is still strong in most areas. Importantly, the sling has not been cut down or heavily altered, preserving its original length and form.

Civil War cavalry slings are increasingly difficult to find in solid condition, and examples marked by well-known contractors like E. Gaylord are especially sought after. This sling is an excellent addition to any Civil War collection and pairs perfectly with a Model 1859 Sharps or Spencer carbine display.
