Description

This is an original World War II Japanese flight cap, made of light tan leather and issued to aviators of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service serving in tropical or hot-weather climates. Lighter in both weight and appearance than standard brown models, this variant was commonly used across the Pacific Islands, Burma, and Southeast Asia—where heat and humidity demanded more breathable flight gear.

Constructed from thin, pliable tan leather and lined with soft natural cotton, this cap includes full-length ear flaps, a button chinstrap, and an adjustable rear strap. Under the flap and along the interior, this example bears clearly visible kanji markings, likely indicating issue numbers or arsenal acceptance. These markings are bold and well-preserved, adding a strong element of authenticity and collector value.

Designed to be worn under flight goggles and over a radio headset, this summer flight cap would have been standard issue for aircrew flying the Ki-43 Oscar, Ki-44 Tojo, or Ki-51 Sonia. Its compact, streamlined design reflects both the engineering priorities and material constraints of the late-war Japanese military.

The cap is 100% original, with intact stitching, supple leather, and light field wear. No postwar repairs or alterations. The rare tan leather construction, combined with the presence of legible wartime kanji, makes this an exceptional example of Imperial Japanese aviation headgear.
