Description
Authentic WWI German Veterans Medal Set — Iron Cross 2nd Class & Hindenburg Cross
Offered here is an original WWI German veterans’ medal pair, featuring the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse) and the Hindenburg Cross (Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer) — two of Imperial Germany’s most recognized awards for service and valor.
The Iron Cross 2nd Class, instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, is constructed of iron with a silver frame, bearing the crowned “W” and the date “1914” on the obverse. The reverse features the royal cipher and oak leaf motif. This decoration was awarded for bravery in the field and meritorious leadership under combat conditions.
Accompanying it is the Hindenburg Cross, introduced in 1934 to honor surviving WWI veterans. This example is the Frontkämpfer (Combatant) version, distinguished by crossed swords behind the central wreath, with the dates 1914–1918 prominently displayed.
Both medals retain their original ribbons in period-correct colors — black and white for the Iron Cross, and black-white-red for the Hindenburg Cross. Surfaces show light age patina and wear consistent with genuine wartime and interwar handling, but all details remain clearly defined.
A historically significant set representing the service, valor, and remembrance of German soldiers who served in the Great War. Ideal for collectors of Imperial German and WWI military decorations.
