Description
US Infantry M1889 New York Nat. Guard white dress spike and pith by Horstmann & Bros
Up for sale is an authentic U.S. Infantry M1881 White Dress Helmet, manufactured by the famed Philadelphia firm Horstmann & Bros., one of the premier American military outfitters of the 19th century. This spiked pith helmet is a striking example of the uniforms worn by U.S. Army infantry during the late Indian Wars and early overseas service period, when American forces were modernizing and adopting distinctive European-influenced dress styles.
The M1881 pattern white pith helmet was used primarily as a full dress and ceremonial headpiece, often worn with the dark blue dress uniform during parades, inspections, and formal occasions. Its iconic spike and front eagle plate, both crafted of brass, symbolize the martial spirit of the post–Civil War U.S. Army. This example retains the Horstmann & Bros. maker mark, a detail highly prized by collectors, as Horstmann was among the most respected suppliers of military goods from the Civil War through the Spanish–American War.
Constructed from lightweight pressed felt and covered in white cotton drill, the helmet was designed to provide a smart, uniform appearance while being practical in warmer climates. The interior shows its period-appropriate leather sweatband, with wear consistent with age and service. Its overall preservation makes this an excellent piece for display, offering an authentic glimpse into the uniforms of America’s frontier and colonial-era infantry.
Examples of genuine U.S. Infantry M1889 spiked helmets are increasingly scarce on the collector’s market, particularly those tied to a known outfitter such as Horstmann & Bros. This helmet is a museum-grade piece, ideal for any collection of American military antiques, Indian Wars memorabilia, or Spanish–American War–era headgear.
