US Infantry M1881 dress spike Pith by Pettibone Society mfg. co

Up for sale is an authentic U.S. Infantry Model 1881 Dress Spike Pith Helmet, manufactured by the respected Pettibone Society Mfg. Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. This style of helmet was adopted by the U.S. Army in the late 19th century as part of its formal dress uniform, intended for parades, ceremonies, and other occasions of high visibility. Distinctive and elegant, the M1881 remains one of the most iconic examples of American military headgear from the post–Civil War era.

Mounted proudly at the crown is the original gilt spike finial, directly influenced by European military fashion of the time. At the front is the impressive U.S. Infantry helmet plate, with the large numeral “4” at its center, denoting service with the 4th Infantry Regiment. Pettibone’s craftsmanship shows through in the finely detailed insignia and the quality of the fittings, which retain excellent presence despite their age.

The interior retains its period green lining, a typical feature of these helmets, meant to add comfort and a touch of refinement to the otherwise rigid structure. Moderate wear and patina throughout testify to the helmet’s authenticity and age, giving it undeniable character.

For those interested in U.S. military history, Victorian-era ceremonial dress, or rare examples of 19th-century regimental equipment, this M1881 Pettibone dress spike helmet offers both historical importance and strong display appeal. It stands as a tangible link to the Army’s period of modernization and ceremonial pageantry at the close of the 19th century.
