Description
This is an original U.S. 37mm M16 cartridge case paired with a 37mm Armor-Piercing projectile, representing correct early–World War II American ordnance for the 37mm Gun M1A2. The cartridge is of the 37×223mm configuration, standard for U.S. 37mm fixed ammunition of this period.
The brass case is marked S.M.C. and dated 1941, identifying production by Scovill Manufacturing Company, a major wartime supplier of cartridge cases to U.S. ordnance contracts. The case is fitted with an M23A1 primer, itself dated 1940, consistent with period practice of using earlier-dated primer lots during early wartime assembly.
The projectile is correctly marked “37G SHOT A.P. M51,” identifying it as an Armor-Piercing Shot, Model 51. This projectile was designed for direct-fire engagement of lightly armored vehicles, fortifications, and hardened targets encountered by U.S. forces in the early years of the war. The M51 A.P. shot was a standard service projectile for the 37mm gun prior to the widespread adoption of later tracer and capped variants.
This complete fixed round configuration was intended for use in the 37mm Cannon M1A2, the improved and more widely issued version of the M1 antitank gun. The M1A2 served extensively with U.S. Army infantry and antitank units during the early WWII period and saw combat in North Africa, the Pacific, and early European operations.
Overall, this example represents a 1941-dated M16 case, correct M23A1 primer, and an M51 A.P. projectile. It is well suited for advanced ordnance collections, reference displays, or museum interpretation focused on early U.S. antitank doctrine and ammunition development.
