Description

Nazi Germany Vehicle Recognition Drape – 40×32″ (100x80cm)

This is an authentic WWII Nazi vehicle recognition drape, measuring approximately 40 x 32 inches (100 x 80 cm). Unlike a standard flag, which features loops for hoisting on a pole, this drape is equipped with four metal grommets, allowing it to be securely affixed to vehicles, armored units, or field positions.

Recognition drapes were issued to aid identification of friendly forces from the air or at long range, reducing the risk of friendly fire from Luftwaffe aircraft or supporting ground units. Their use was officially mandated prior to the invasion of France and the Netherlands in 1940, as detailed in wartime German orders:

“In anticipation of recognition problems between the Army and Luftwaffe support units during the upcoming invasion of France and the Netherlands, the German General Staff issued the following order in March 1940.(3) … A swastika flag and orange smoke are to be utilized by all troops for recognition purposes when in a combat zone. The swastika flag is, according to circumstances, to be spread out on the ground, to be waved to and fro, or to be stretched across a vehicle…”

Constructed from durable field-grade fabric, this example shows period stitching and correct proportions consistent with early- to mid-war manufacture.

The use of recognition drapes tapered off later in the war as the Allied powers gained and maintained air superiority, rendering such identification measures increasingly dangerous to display.

A historically significant and well-preserved artifact illustrating the Luftwaffe–Heer coordination challenges of early WWII operations, ideal for collectors of military field equipment and vehicle accoutrements.
