Description

This is an original 75mm DEC shell paired with a sc 916 L 18 D marked cartridge case, representing a fired example of U.S. World War I–era artillery ammunition for the 75mm field gun.

The projectile is marked “s13Z” on the shell body, a period ordnance marking consistent with early 20th-century manufacture and inspection practices. The shell retains its rifled driving band, clearly showing engraving from the gun’s rifling, confirming that this projectile has been fired rather than remaining unfired or display-only from original service.

The cartridge case headstamp “sc 916 L 18 D” indicates production by the Scovill Manufacturing Company, with a 1918 manufacture date, placing this round firmly within World War I wartime production. Scovill was a major U.S. supplier of brass cartridge cases for American artillery during the conflict.

Fitted to the projectile is an M1907 fuze, a combination time and impact fuze widely used on U.S. 75mm shells during World War I. The M1907 fuze allowed the projectile to function either by preset time delay for airburst or by direct impact, making it versatile for both shrapnel and high-explosive applications. Many M1907 fuzes were produced by subcontractors, including Scovill and related manufacturers, and this example is consistent with period construction and markings.

As a fired example, this 75mm DEC shell offers clear physical evidence of service use, making it particularly appealing to collectors and researchers interested in artillery employment, ordnance manufacturing, and battlefield-expended munitions. It is well suited for advanced artillery collections, museum reference displays, or educational exhibits focused on World War I U.S. field artillery and ammunition development.
