Up for sale is an authentic Japanese iron jingasa helmet, featuring the distinguished Maruni Mokko kamon crest. Worn by ashigaru foot soldiers and lower-ranking samurai during the Edo period, the jingasa served as both lightweight battlefield protection and a symbol of loyalty to one’s lord. This example reflects traditional craftsmanship and carries the heraldic crest of its original owner.
The helmet is constructed from iron with its shallow, conical profile intact. The surface retains its original aged lacquer, while the Maruni Mokko kamon remains clearly visible on the front. Inside, traces of the original red-painted finish are still present, with areas of flaking that reveal the authentic period application beneath. This red paint was often used as a protective coating and its survival today, even in partial form, is a remarkable testament to the helmet’s age and originality.
