Description

Remington UMC 75mm Long fuse shell

This is an original Remington-UMC 75 mm long-fuze artillery shell, a period example associated with early 20th-century field artillery service. The shell body was manufactured by Remington Arms–Union Metallic Cartridge Company (Remington UMC), one of the principal American producers of artillery ammunition during the World War I era, supplying both U.S. forces and Allied contracts.

The projectile is fitted with the French “I.A.” Model 15 fuze (Instantanée Allongée), a long-pattern impact fuze developed and widely used by France beginning in 1915. This fuze type was designed to provide instantaneous detonation upon impact while extending forward from the projectile body, improving reliability against soft targets, fieldworks, and wire entanglements. The presence of a French-pattern fuze on an American-manufactured shell reflects the extensive Allied standardization and interchange of components during the First World War, particularly for 75 mm ammunition compatible with the famous French Canon de 75 modèle 1897.

The long-fuze configuration is visually distinctive and highly representative of WWI artillery technology, illustrating the transitional period in fuze design as armies refined methods for airburst, surface burst, and obstacle-clearing effects. Surviving examples with intact fuze assemblies are increasingly scarce, as many were expended in service or dismantled postwar.

This shell serves as an excellent reference artifact for collectors, historians, or institutional displays focused on World War I artillery, Allied munitions production, or the evolution of fuze technology. Its combination of American manufacture and French ordnance design highlights the multinational cooperation that characterized Allied artillery logistics during the Great War.
