Description

Hollifield DOTTER Rifle Rod Sub-Target Device

The Hollifield DOTTER Rifle Rod Sub-Target Device is a complete early 20th century marksmanship training system. This example includes original .30-06 Government inert cartridges and full accessories. Developed for economical indoor and barracks training, the Hollifield DOTTER allowed realistic trigger control practice without live ammunition.

Manufactured by the Hollifield Target Practice Rod Company of Middletown, New York, this system became widely associated with the United States Army. The device saw use with the M1903 Springfield, as illustrated on the box instructions.

How the Hollifield “Dotter” Sub-target Rifle Works

The Hollifield DOTTER system converts firing pin energy into a visible strike on a sub-target. The included five .30-06 Government fluted body inert cartridges contain a sprung internal rod. When struck by the firing pin, the impulse transfers through the rod system to mark the target.

This allowed soldiers to practice sight alignment and trigger squeeze safely. The system provided immediate visual feedback. It significantly reduced ammunition costs while improving marksmanship fundamentals.

Included Components

This complete set includes:

  • Five .30-06 Govt fluted body DOTTER inert cartridges

    • Headstamped Frankford Arsenal

  • Two straight brass tube needle rods

  • Target Type A (bullseye) booklet

  • Target Type D booklet (simulated 200–300 yard shoulders-up silhouette)

  • Aim-fixing target slip and marking disks on staff

  • Adjustable target for windage and elevation training

  • Rubber target holder

  • Original box with instructions affixed

The internal instructions remain firmly attached and largely intact. The exterior label survives but shows expected fragility. The box remains square and structurally sound. It closes properly and retains all hardware.

Historical Significance

The Hollifield DOTTER represents an important development in American military training doctrine. It reflects early 20th century emphasis on precision rifle fire. Systems like this helped standardize marksmanship instruction before and during World War I.

Complete, intact examples rarely survive with all rods, cartridges, targets, and packaging. This set offers strong collector appeal for U.S. military training equipment enthusiasts.
