Description
Belgian MECAR Grenade Launcher for Kar98K – Original Surplus
This Belgian MECAR grenade launcher for Kar98K is an original postwar spigot-type launcher made for Mauser-pattern rifles. It remains a strong surplus example, complete with its original black leather case, and presents in like new condition overall with only minor handling and storage-related wear.
Belgian MECAR Grenade Launcher for Kar98K
This launcher retains the classic MECAR pattern with a blued spigot body, twin clamp attachment system, and a black painted ladder sight graduated in meters from 25 to 100. The numbered body, marked SN: 0090, adds another desirable identifying detail. Together with the original leather case, it makes a very good accessory for collectors of Cold War rifle grenade equipment and Mauser-related field gear. Postwar MECAR examples for the Kar98K are documented as Belgian-made launchers that clamp to the rifle and use a graduated flip-up sight.
Construction / Configuration / Pattern
The launcher affixes to the rifle by means of two alternating clamps with thumb screws. The spigot is blued and remains in excellent condition, retaining nearly all of its finish aside from a few light handling marks. The sight ladder is painted black and graduated in meters at 25, 50, 75, and 100. The original black leather case remains present and uses a brass Lift the Dot closure. MECAR produced postwar rifle grenade launchers in Belgium, and surviving Kar98K examples are noted for this clamp-on launcher pattern and meter-marked ladder sight.
Historical Context / Pattern Development
MECAR was a Belgian arms maker. Their postwar grenade-launching equipment formed part of the wider NATO-era shift toward standardized rifle grenade systems. Kar98K launchers of this type reflect the continued postwar use of Mauser-pattern rifles in Europe and abroad, even after the end of German wartime production. That gives this piece interest not only as a Mauser accessory, but also as a practical example of early Cold War rifle grenade development. MECAR itself was a Belgian manufacturer established in 1938 and later became KNDS Belgium.
Condition
Condition is surplus to like new. The launcher itself remains in excellent condition and retains nearly all of its bluing, with only a few minor handling marks on the spigot. The black painted sight ladder presents well. The original black leather case is also in excellent condition overall, though the belt loop shows a tear. The leather has stiffened with age, but it remains flexible enough to allow spigot egress. The brass Lift the Dot closure and other hardware present strongly.
