Description

1939 Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse) with Original Presentation Case
By Wilhelm Deumer K.G., Lüdenscheid

This is an original 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class (EK I), one of the most prestigious frontline decorations of the Second World War, awarded for repeated acts of bravery or outstanding leadership in combat. Unlike the 2nd Class, the Iron Cross 1st Class was a pin-back award worn directly on the left breast pocket of the uniform and could only be received after prior award of the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

This example was manufactured by Wilhelm Deumer K.G. of Lüdenscheid, a well-known and respected wartime maker of German orders and decorations. The cross exhibits correct three-piece construction, with a magnetic iron core framed by a silvered outer border. The obverse features the raised 1939 date beneath the national emblem, while the reverse is plain, as issued. The iron core retains its darkened finish, with light, even wear consistent with age and careful handling.

The reverse pin assembly is correct to Deumer production, with a solid hinge, pin, and catch, all intact and functional. The cross is accompanied by its original presentation case, an increasingly scarce pairing. The case is period correct, with a black exterior and a fitted interior designed specifically for the Iron Cross 1st Class. The interior lining remains intact and presents well, offering excellent display and protection.

Wilhelm Deumer EK I examples are highly regarded among collectors for their quality of manufacture and historical significance. This complete set—cross and original case—represents a fine example of a combat decoration awarded for valor during World War II and is an excellent addition to any collection of German military medals, decorations, or Third Reich militaria.
