Description

U.S. Caliber .30 M1 High Pressure Test Cartridges – Lake City Arsenal Proof Load Box (20 Rounds)

Caliber .30 M1 High Pressure Test Cartridges

Presented here is an original box of 20 Caliber .30 M1 High Pressure Test cartridges, manufactured for proofing and controlled testing purposes. These cartridges were specifically produced to evaluate the safety margin and structural integrity of firearm actions and operating systems. Because proof loads generate pressures well beyond standard service ammunition, they were intended exclusively for controlled testing procedures conducted by trained personnel.

Therefore, these cartridges were never meant for routine firing or operational use. Instead, they were issued for proofing procedures in which the strength of a firearm’s chamber and locking system could be verified. Under no circumstances were these cartridges intended to be used as standard ammunition. Accordingly, this example is being offered strictly as a collectible reference item, representing an important part of U.S. military ammunition testing and quality assurance practices.

Manufacturer of .30 M1 high pressure test cartridges

This ammunition was loaded by Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, one of the principal suppliers of small-arms ammunition to the United States Military. Lake City has historically produced large quantities of service ammunition for U.S. forces, and consequently many specialized testing loads—such as proof cartridges—were also manufactured there.

The lot number printed on the box identifies the production batch as:

Ammunition Lot LC 12029

Box Markings

The front label of the box clearly identifies the specialized nature of the contents. The printed text reads:

20 CARTRIDGES
HIGH PRESSURE TEST
CALIBER .30 M1
FOR TEST ONLY
DANGEROUS

These warnings were prominently displayed to ensure that the cartridges would not be mistaken for standard service ammunition.

Top Panel Safety Notice

The top of the box includes a printed caution statement regarding the proper conditions required during proof testing procedures. The notice reads:

CAUTION
Both cartridges and gun chamber must be dry, clean, and free of oil at the time of firing

This instruction reflects the strict procedural controls that were required when high-pressure test loads were being used.

Condition

The box remains in good overall condition, and it has clearly been preserved with care. The exterior cardboard structure remains solid, and notably no major tears or staining are present. Additionally, the original label remains firmly affixed and fully legible.

The label’s distinctive red text on a white background is still bright and clearly visible, although some light aging consistent with its age can be observed. Furthermore, the box has been wrapped in a protective cover, which has helped preserve the graphics and structural integrity.

Because specialized proof-load packaging was typically discarded after testing, surviving boxes are relatively uncommon. As a result, examples that retain strong labels and intact structure are particularly desirable to collectors of U.S. military ammunition history.

Collectibility

High-pressure test cartridges represent an important part of the military ordnance testing process. They demonstrate how firearms were verified for safety and durability before being approved for service. Consequently, original proof-load packaging—especially when clearly marked and well preserved—provides a tangible link to those quality control procedures.

This box therefore serves not only as a collectible artifact but also as a useful reference example of U.S. military proof ammunition packaging.
