Winchester 1886 45-70 Rebuild MFG 1890 Big Bore Lever Action Rifle Western
$2,500.00
Up for auction is a Winchester 1886 chambered in .45-70. Date of manufacture on this gun’s receiver is 1890, but the reason we cannot sell this gun as an antique is due to the fact that this gun is a modern rebuild utilizing an 1890 receiver essentially eliminating its eligibility from antique status due to having been modified from its original factory condition. This aside, the rifle is in great mechanical condition with a buttery smooth action, like new barrel, and some beautiful shiny wood. The lever does feature a gap in it possibly from being welded onto the action bar by the gunsmith that built this rifle. Despite this gap, the lever feels rock solid and is only a cosmetic issue. A great rifle for anyone looking for a large bore lever gun that they can shoot without feeling bad about using a piece of history.
The Winchester Model 1886 was a lever-action repeating rifle designed by John Browning to handle some of the more powerful cartridges of the period. Originally chambered in .45-70 Government, .45-90 Sharps, and .40-82 Winchester, it was later offered in a half dozen other large cartridges, including the .50-110 Winchester.Despite being originally designed for use with black powder, the action was strong enough to make the jump to smokeless powder with only minor modifications, and was subsequently chambered in the smokeless .33 Winchester cartridge beginning in 1903.
